SHETLAND OPEN SINGLES 2011/12

The season's most prestigious tournament was played for on Friday night @ Lerwick Legion with 52 men aiming to be crowed Shetland darts champion. By the quarter final stage only one previous winner was left in the competition so a new champ looked very probable, first up Barry Couper continued his good form beating John Robert Scott 4-2, then Nigel Llewellyn won a very close game 4-3 against Brian Patterson, a new champ was guaranteed when Angus Galbraith lost 4-2 to Roger Irvine, and finally Tommy Williamson won 4-1 against Gareth MacRitchie to complete the semi final line up. Nigel Llewellyn booked his place in the final with a good 5-2 win over Barry Couper and was to be joined by Roger Irvine who won 5-1 against Tommy Williamson despite Tommy hitting the season high checkout of 170. In the final which was best of 11 legs Nigel stormed into a 4-0 lead thanks to good steady scoring and hitting the all important double when required however Roger is a fierce competitor and came roaring back to level at four each, Nigel dug deep to win the next only for Roger the square the match again 5-5 to set up a dramatic last leg shootout, with both players scoring well it was down to the double and with both players having the chance to win their first Shetland champ title it was Nigel who hit double six to win incredibly his first major singles honour in the sport.
