Season 2011/12

Tommy Strachan Memorial

On Saturday night the Lerwick legion was the venue for the Tommy Strachan memorial singles, with 20 men and 12 women making the draw a nice round 32. Come the quarter final stage there were victories for George Smith beating Andy Glen 4-2, Paul Tait beat Anrold Brown 4-0, Barry Couper beating Steven Isbister 4-0, and finally the match that had the crowd going between the only remaining women Gena Smith and Jim Wood, with Gena having already knocked out 2 men it was looking like Jim was next at 3-1 down but Jim clawed his way back to 3 all, with good scoring from both players in the decider Jim snatched the win with a cheeky double top twice 80 checkout to the disappointment of the spectators and Gena who was sitting on a double. After a brief pause for the raffle the first semi final saw George Smith defeating Paul Tait 5-2 in what was a repeat of last years final which Paul won, so there was to be a new name on the shield. The second semi saw Barry Couper beat Jim Wood by the same score to take his place in the final. George started the final well winning the first leg in 14 darts, but little did he know it was to be his last leg as Barry reeled off 5 legs in a row playing excellent darts to claim the title for the first time and take the shield back to Burra.

There were 180's from Marc Henry x2, Iain Blance, Paul Tait and Barry Couper. Also checkouts of 118 from Andy Glen and 115 from Barry Couper.

The SDA would like to thank the Legion and bar staff for supplying the prizes and hosting the competition, and Rose Tulloch for running the raffle and presenting her fathers shield to the winner.

All money raised on the night will be donated to a charity of Rose's choice.

(winner Barry Couper, Rose Tulloch, runner up George Smith).
