Anniversary Shield 2012.

After the late night drama of the inter county the night before it was back to the Legion on Saturday afternoon for the prizegiving and Anniversary shield competitions, a good turnout of 52 men entered, by the quarter final stage the defending champ Gareth MacRitchie had fallen by the wayside so there was to be a new name on the shield. Arnold Brown won through to the semi final with a good win over John Robert Scott, then Barry Couper joined him beating Orkney player Ivan Leslie, the next game saw another inter county duel with Kevin Gray of Orkney win a very tight game against Gordon Irvine, and in the final quarter final match Tommy Williamson won an equally tight match beating Orkney's Stevie Linklater. In the first semi final Barry ended Arnold's good run easing into the final 3-0, and he was joined by Kevin who won through 3-1 against Tommy. In the final which was best of seven legs it was Kevin that started the better winning the opening two legs but Barry showed his true Trowie determination to power back and take four legs in a row to win the shield and end a great season for him on a high.

In the women competition 32 ladies entered, by the quarter finals only one Orkney player was left in the draw and that was Katie Croy and she moved into the semi's beating Elizabeth Irvine, Sandra MacRitchie was next through with a win over Margaret Goodlad, next up saw defending champ Iris Anderson progress through against Melanie Couper and the final semi place went to Vickki Scott as she beat Louise Arcus. To the delight of the Orkney support Katie won her place in the final with a good victory over Sandra and she would meet Iris who won against Vickki. The final was best of 5 legs and was a really good standard with Iris winning 3-2 to defend her title, but Katie can be proud of her performance and the fact she hit her first ever 180 during the day.
